Yes, some do travel...I once saw a Van Gogh exhibit that was in a musuem (can't remember which one now) that was there for a limited time. "Starry Night" was among the paintings and it was wonderful to see it for real.

Famous paintings have a home. The museum that owns the painting decides if they want it to travel or not. Many very famous painting just stay put until the clearance and security to allow it to travel to another museum is worked out. Sometimes that will happen. I saw the Mona Lisa in Washington after the Italians worked out the travel arrangements for it and they had to be certain that it would be under adaquate security once it got here even in the National Gallery of Washington they weren't sure it would be secure enough for such a famous painting.
But in general painting do travel in group shows that will be featured at a Museum for a once in a lifetime look at such n' such and artist or group of artist. Usually they take a few painting at a time in this way they might attract more people, but Museums often lend there work out and then after a year or so it is crated up and brought back to the owning museum.

The previous are correct - many (but not all) art galleries and museums are happy to lend for special exhibitions. Some big galleries have exhibitions travelling the country (whichev er country) to smaller cities. Some works are too delicate to move (such as very old paintings on wood, canvas is more forgiving). Some galleries, and I won't say which, won't ever lend for any purpose at all.

There was this very famous 'road-trip' some paintings made by Rembrandt made some years ago. It was a collection from many places ( States, Russia, Europe) It traveled the world and such a feat is never been done after that.

Yes it happens but occasions like that are very rare indeed.

Museums are often reluctant to move paintings because it may compromise their conservation; but one of the missions of a museum is the promotion of cultural heritage.
A lot of temporary exhibitions gather famous paintings thanks to international or national cooperation. Some exhibitions are entirely moving, throughout the world: 3 or 4 museums in several countries can show famous paintings to people who can't afford or spend time travelling to see famous paintings.
For example, a great exhibition on Courbet takes place in Paris. 3 museums have worked for this cultural event: the Orsay Museum (Paris), the Fabre Museum (Montpellier, France) and the Met; the paintings have been gathered in a specific area in the Grand Palais, so museums staffs took great care when moving them, especially huge pieces.

Hi there,

Part of the Hermitage museum's collection is now here in Lisbon.
If everything goes well, Lisbon will be one of the few Cities in the world to hold part of its collection.
Probably the most important portuguese museum : Calouste Gulbenkian, also exchanges collections with other museums.
Recently it held a very important greek collection

Kind regards,

José
