Why is tattoo in quotes? This isn't a pretend thing. It's a part of your body once you get it and you develop an attachment to it(or an intense hate if you regret doing it).
Personally, I have four tattoos so far and each one has an emotional significance to me. One celebrates my setting out into the world on my own and succeeding in my life, another is a memorial for my daughter's death.
These are not things to be taken lightly. If you get a tattoo just to get a tattoo you're bound to regret it later in life. While I don't believe everyone needs to have emotional attachment to their tattoo, I do think you need to think it through for a while before deciding on getting one and where it's going to be.

I got my tattoos because no matter where life takes me or my children they will always be with me. I have their feet tattooed from their birth certificates on my back with their initials

Tattoos are a work of art that you can wear and carry with you for the rest of your life. They're also very meaningful.

By the time im done i will have a total of 13 tats. All of them have a meaning behind it even the number 13 signifies something. They run from my sign, my personality, my military service, my travels, my family, my spiritual side. So when people ask about them im proud to tell about them.

I have 4 tattoos and they all have special meanings to me. My first was for my 16th b-day, 2nd for my sisters wedding, 3rd For my 17th wedding, and my 4th was for my high school graduation. I graduated a year early so it really ment alot. The one for my 17th d-day was a memorial for my two grandmothers. The one for my 16th was a memory for my biological mother, and the one for my sisters wedding was so that we would always be close.

Basically because I want one.
I only have one at the moment, but getting another next October. The one I have at the moment, is to remind myself to get over my past, but learn from it at the same time. And to remind myself I will always be loved.

I got my first tattoo to remind me that I can do whatever I set my mind to.
I got my second in rememberence of my cousin who was murdered. 4 of my other cousins went with me and we all got matching tattoos for her, it's something that's deeply personal to all of us. She's got our backs now forever.

I have 4 tats, I think that tats are beautiful and that they reflect a time in your life of either being happy or expressing your feelings. Everyone to me should have a meaning behind each tat that they have. All I have to say is think hard and long before getting a tat.
