I tried looking for Area 51 but all it was just like a white smudge while everything else looks clear.

Didn't notice that military bases are whited out. Was able to look at a street level map of NAS North Island, NAB Coronado, Naval Station 32nd street and Beale Air Force Base, on both map and Satellite images.

Did you try looking at regular military bases?

Area 51 is a special case. Most bases are shown with the major roads and even satellite photos.

Not all are, it depends on the security level of the installation in question.

Apparently Area 51 is perfectly visible, while the Vice President's residence is not.

It's understandable why they'd do all this, of course. It's bad enough that some potential enemies have surveillance technology good enough to peek at everyone's stuff, we don't need terrorists and the like doing it for free.

For a long time now it's been illegal to publish photos of US military bases. It's nothing new.
