It's the A-6A Intruder for bombing and the A-6B for "Iron Hand" SEAD missions... they also had the KA-6 Intruder tanker version. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A-6_Intruder#A-6C

The A-6E version was in production at the time, but NEVER used over Vietnam because the DoD had concerns about the electronics falling into the hands of the Soviets.

Sadly, the US Navy retired the A-6E following Desert Storm... and to this date, the Navy doesn't actually HAVE a replacement ALL-WEATHER attack aircraft.

The A6 was the first fighter/bomber aircraft produced with electronic flight guidance - that is electronic flight control displays. It also had terrain following capability and some had FLIR (forward looking infrared) imagery systems. My boss at Hughes Aircraft (in late 60s) was a major designer/inventor of that system. We used a lot of its concepts on the initial designs of the F-14 and F-15 systems. Unfortunately, the movie cited, as entertaining as it was, contained many inaccuracies about the A6, its capabilities and missions. At one point in SEA it was used for all weather low level interdiction missions but was discontinued due to losses. I was told by pilots that they could follow some low level tracks by the A6 crashes enroute. It was thought that it could be used as a Wild Weasel (SAM intradiction) aircraft due to its 2 man crew configuration using improved Shrike missiles but it proved less than satisfactory in this role.

A6 Intruder

A-6 Intruder. Built by Grumman, it's a subsonic, twin engine attack aircraft. For a carrier based plane it could carry a huge payload. It had a two man crew, one pilot and one weapon system operator.

There was also an electronic warfare version, the EA-6 Prowler. It had a four man crew to operate all the electronics and generally was unarmed.

It's the A-6B Intruder.

The movie is modeled off Stephen Coonts' book by the same name.

Well from what i know, the Grumman A-6B in the movies was tasked with Suppression of Enemy Air Defenses (or SEAD) misions. So the only nickname/codename that comes to me is "Wild Weasel"(the codename used by the U.S.A.F for aircraft tasked for SEAD missions), or "Iron" something(hand or fist i guess), nickname given by the U.S.N
