of steel, how would that affect the rest of the world economically? For example, would Walmarts go out of business or would they just move their vendors and contractors to Vietnam or Iraq, instead?

I want to find out from a militarist's perspective, not an economist's (though if the responder is both of those, then all the better). I've already asked the economists.

One can't answer your question militarily. It is an economic question.

The answer is no.

Three reasons.

#1 China has a labor force of over 800 million. Because of unemployment, and underemployment, that will keep wages low and the cost of living low for decades. Unlike Vietnam that simply does not have a large labor pool. If manufacturing is shifted there in such a way that would affect China, the cost of living in Vietnam will increase rapidly.

#2 China has a very stable government and society, unlike Iraq that is very unstable and will be that way for decades.

#3 Because of the first two reason, business considers China a good and safe place to invest.

The real bellwether of a countries economic health is not what our government or the talking heads tell us. But rather how business treats them.

Peace

The one thing to fear in any collapse of China's economy is famine. A lack of food has been behind most of the earth-shaking events in China. The right to sustenance is the chief human right in today's China. And hungry people arm themselves and cross frontiers into other countries to get food.
