You looked this up on the internet already, right???? Well, what comes to mind for the whalers of years gone by was that they needed food that wouldn't spoil easily. Hard Tack was a type of bread that fit its name and served to sop up the liquids in soups or stews etc. In a pinch it served to quiet a rumbing stomach. Salted fish, or fish caught while whaling probably was on the menu too. In the days of scurvy, folks didn't have Vitamin C sources. I'm sure there were keggers of wine and fruits preserved in it to round things out. There's a book you can get at Amazon.com called Cooking on 19th Century Whaling Ships that might help.

Salted pork and fish was popular-ship's biscuit or hardtack-canned soups and vegetables (yes, they had canned food back then)-a lot of them used lemon juice to prevent scurvy, some extra smart ones would use sauerkraut-and the ever popular grog, 1/4 pint strong rum to 3/4 pint water, issued daily.
