" The Sethu Project" does not aim at 'destroying the entire sethu'!
It involves cutting a little part of it only to facilate navigation of big vessels and avoid going round Sri Lanka !
When this project is completed the people in the southern districts of TN would enjoy many benefits.
Govindacharya (founder of Bharat Vikash Samaj) has said :
that the BJP was engaged in doublespeak by projecting itself
as a saviour of the bridge, while the " actual sin was performed by it only".
The then BJP Minister Vijaya Goel had mooted the idea to destroy the sethu and then the Shipping Ministry under BJP
leader Shatrughan Sinha had finally approved the project and sent the same to the Cabinet for approval." (The Hindu dtd.29/10/2007 - Page 12).
Hence, this is an issue purposely raised for getting political mileage on the eve of the elections!

First of all, nobody is destroying the setu.
I think the problem began when we started confusing two things. Removing the 'structure' to deepen the sea and removing a mythological artifact, religious importance of the story of Ramasetu are two different things. One should not think that removing the so called 'Ramasetu' means destruction of the Ramayana or the story related to the Ramasetu.
Also, the debate is just for getting political milage out of the story and not really thinking about what is good for the people of Tamilandu and what is of strategic importance to India.
