I'm wondering, if you knew someone was guilty of something and they got away with it... would you get them in trouble for something else that they didn't do? So they get the punishment they should have gotten before anyway, only for something different?

It really depends on the scale of what they are guilty of.

If they stole a candy bar, then there's no reason to get involved. However, If they raped or shot someone, you'll either want to talk to law enforcement or just stay out of it for your own safety.

You get the point. Either way, you should always find out what possible problems could result as part of your action.

As I'm sure everyone will say: "Two wrongs don't make a right." However, how do you know the second "wrong" isn't a right? What if having done this "wrong" was for all the right reasons? Tough call depending on your moral judgement.

Most importantly, just decide whether or not it is worth it for you to get involved or not.

Well, let's follow that logic. . .

Offender gets away with crime. You accuse him of another crime and, even though he did not do it, he goes to prison for the crime.

You have made a false statement and possibly committed perjury to boot. In addition, the person who actually did commit the crime, now gets away with it. That makes you, for all intents and purposes, his accomplice.

Hmmm, I guess if some knows you committed the above crimes, and got away with it; they, too could accused you of a crime you did not committ.

If you know about a crime and have not reported it, then you are in fact aiding and abetting that person. best report the initial offense to the proper law enforcement officials. Maybe if you told us what it was about we can give you better advice.

A suspect could get away with any crime when not proven in court.

No..that would be lowering yourself to their level. If you know that they got away with something that they did that was wrong, you should report what you know. 2 wrongs don't make a right!!

That would be very childish. I wouldn't do anything like that. I usually mind my own business.
