i would recommend some creams or beige...maybe with some light browns or tans.

A lot of colors go with it, and each one will give a different effect. For example, shades of green, aqua and more blues for furnishings in a room, thrown in with art of fish and beaches will give a marine look.
I like the natural colour of wood on Royal Blue, and usually prefer wicker furniture or teak sofas. If you want the cushions high lighted, have black furniture. If the furniture need be highlighted, how about white?

I think you can still use black and white with the light blue carpet as long as you add some light blue accents to bring it all together. A black and white patterned pillow with a little blue in it, a collection of blue candles, a picture of a vase of blue hydrangeas will be all you need. Black and white are neutral so will look great with any color, even light blue.

Royal Blue is a beautiful color and a nice challenge when on the floor. I would take fabric swatches from a fabric store and lay them accross the carpet OR clothing in your closet of differing colors and lay them on the floor - this creates a pallette - allowing you to see what colors will best combine with your r. blue. Also any favorite wall art laid on the carpet will help you decide on colors for the rest of the room - couch - pillows - candles - flowers - drapes/shades, etc.
Also you many want to lay an area rug - in the focal point area of your den - over the royal blue - that is multicolor but that mixes with the royal blue or pulls it out from the room to lessen the magnitude of the large area of solid blue!
Try this and let me know how it works for you - would love to hear.

I'd say, stick with neutral colors such as beige, cream, chocolate, etc. If you have the funds to purchase new furniture, you might consider switching out the carpet and choosing the carpet around your furniture though. Furniture is quite an investment. Most towns have carpet warehouses where carpeting can be purchased at wholesale prices.

Well.... according to color theory, you should technically go first for orange as they are complimentary. Or you could go with red because they are analogous. I would avoid yellow though because yellow has a natural tendency to make people tense or angry. Most arguments actually start in a yellow room or a room where the light is such that it reflects off of everything in a yellow tint. Personally, though, I would go with an earthy orange. Something close to brown. Leather maybe?

Go for a medium neutral [ caramel, or gray ]. Then paint the walls a lighter shade of same [ warn beige, or palest gray ].
Add some bright throw pillows in hot pink, bright orange, lemon yellow, or even bright turquoise.

I'd personally suggest neutral colors:tan, beige, white, ivory or if you want to try to make your den bold: red, yellow, or green might do. If you like darkened rooms, then black might work with that. The brighter the furniture, the brighter the room.

A monochromatic colour scheme with contrasting colours in the accessories would make the room pop but still be a relaxing place to think.
Dove gray would also be lovely.
