if it is thin, you can use tape , but it wont look that great.

there are several ways to hang tapestries, some better than others, but nails or thumbtacks come in somewhere.

the best ways won't put holes in the tapestry itself.

explain to you mom that thumb tacks are very small holes and you can use your finger to smear in a little spackle when it comes down, you can use those hook things with doulble sided tape but chances are the tapestry will come down and also double sided tape and stuff like that leaves a worst mess than small holes even 1/4" holes can be easily slicked over with spackle(drywall mud) then you just paint over it the tape leaves residue behind which will have to be scaped and in the long run make for more work and bigger mess. Dont let your mom know the tapes worse but tell her how easy holes are to fix that way if she says know to the holes you can tape the crap out of it then they figure it out later.

command strips - work wonderfully, hold beautifully and wont damage the wall or the tapestry. I use them to hang everything in my house - pictures, ironing board, etc.

"Command" brand hooks. They work really well! You can find them at most hardware or home stores. They are completely removable, without damaging the wall.

With a pole, it could be hung like a flag.
