Without going into the massive amount of Scripture that supports ETERNAL HELL OF FIRE, here is a brief summary.

Fire and the lake of fire were originally prepared for the devil and fallen angels.
By listening to the LIES of Satan, people have essentially made the devil king of the world that they were given--and decided to bend their knee to Satan rather than God.

Therefore, people who do not repent are thrown in hell (which is eternal and has plenty of literal fire) to the devil's punishment. And folks, not only does God punish in hell, but the devil hates people, made in the image of God.

Hell originally was taken as a dump on the outskirts of town, where things were burning all the time. The smoke, the fumes, the gagging made for an idea that the people could really understand

Good question, since the bible does not teach that there is firey hell.

Jeremiah 7:31 “And they have built the high places... in order to burn their sons and their daughters in the fire, a thing that I had not commanded and that had not come up into my heart.’”

I'm Mormon and I believe that it will be more of a mental hell than an actual place. I think once people are there they will be freed from it when they accept the Gospel (so I don't believe it's final)

The smell of burnt offerings is pleasing to the Lord. (See the OT.) Mental Hells just don't produce the desired aroma.

Technically your absolutely correct in the fact that real torture comes mentaly and not in the form of fire. I suppose its because hell was portrayed as this in the medieval times when peopl burned witches

Well the concept was invented in a time when there was no air conditioning and it was a hot part of the world, so that seemed like a very hellish thing to imagine.
