I think you just answered your own question. But look at it this way. When historians of the future look towards this period of immigration, the anti-immigrant types will be looked at the same way as the Know-Nothings of the 1840s and the KKK of the 1920s. These groups were composed of respectable family types looking out for the welfare of honest, law-abiding American citizens...at least that was the mainstream perception back then. Now they're seen for what they are - a bunch of hateful, racist quacks who made poor powerless immigrants' lives miserable (ironically, the ancestors of many of the current immigrant-bashers) and deserve their legacy of infamy. The Lou Dobbs's and Bill O'Reilly's of the world will suffer the same fate for their ignorance and selfishness decades from now.
So relax. We're on the right side of history, and everyone decrying the "invasion" of "illegals" will get their just desserts in the history books, and the world will curse their name forever.

You sure shouldn't be using this site as a measure of the general population's attitude!
If you believe this racism crap, then you might think Bush is the greatest president ever, all Liberals are communists, the McCain's killed their daughter, no-body's going to vote for Hillary, 9/11 was an inside job, and all kinds of other crap.
Bigots are basically cowards and they express their views anonymously. The general population doesn't like illegals because, well, sorry to say it, THEY'RE ILLEGAL! That's really all there is to it.
My parents came here legally, I work with legal immigrants, and know a few people who are here on visas or permits and going by the rules. A lot of people do. It really isn't all that hard to get in here under the rules. So yes, I'm one of those people who resent illegal immigrants. Am I a racist? Hardly.

Hate is ugly indeed. The issue here is the unintended consequences that ILLEGAL immigrants have and the impact on the American tax payer. With millions of health care costs left unpaid by illegals, the loss of jobs to citizens ( and don't even try and tell me they only take the jobs Americans don't want. that's crap straight up!) legally entitled to work here. The average cost per illegal to the American tax payer is $15,000 a year. The USA is a sovern nation, to enter illegally is a crime period. Personally I understand the struggles people from other countries endure. I understand they just want a decent life for them selves. So in a small minority racism does exist, but the majority just wants our laws to be respected, as well as our country. To fly a Mexican flag during a protest by illegals on U.S. soil is offensive, and racist towards all Americans.

unlawful alien isn't a race. Hispanic isn't a race. it is not an immigration debate. unlawful extraterrestrial beings are no longer immigrants in any felony sense of the word. it is not even an unlawful immigration debate. It has to do with implementing the guidelines we've already got on the books. there is not any debate approximately it, different than interior the 'minds' off people who help people flooding into our united states via the loads of thousands at the same time as spitting on our immigration rules, our united states, and our voters.

Anti-illegal immigration opinions might not start out racist and hateful, but you can't deny, we get a lot of crap on here for standing up for this country. It just evolves into legitimate arguments to that point. Pro-illegal immigration people have this same problem too, you know.

Anti illegal immigration is not about racism by itself. Its after all ILLEGAL immigration and it is therefore wrong (at least as long as there are legal routes to immigration).
The problem is that this is used as a platform by a lot of racism driven individuals to spread hate. By highlighting this illegal activity with respect to one ethnic group, they try to alienate and instigate hate towards a large group of people.

For a lot of people, it is misplaced anger. They are mad at the government for not enforcing our laws and for allowing so many illegals here that it is effecting our economy and our lives.
They are mad at the employers who hire them. When 12 to 20 million people take jobs for less money, don't pay taxes, use the schools when they can't speak English, use the hospitals when they can't pay, it is detrimental to those who can't possibly compete for those jobs because they have debts and have to pay taxes, so need a normal wage. Their children's education is messed up because some in their classes can't speak English.
Their health insurance and taxes are higher because of the unpaid medical bills which are absorbed by all of us. The crime rate and gangs are worse. Identity theft makes it difficult for those who have a social security number used by several others to get a job or a loan.
It doesn't have anything to do with race. The Irish came here years ago in droves and they were not welcomed either by any means according to history.
The employers who need to use immigrant workers should file with the government and keep it legal. It would be so much better for everybody.

I am NOT racist, but in England, immigrants are given priority over our own people. It is virtually impossible for young British couples to buy a house here, as house prices have rocketed, so most young couples rely on rented authority housing, but immigrants jump the housing list, and get the houses above someone who has been on the list for 5 years. They are then given money to completely furnish the house. Isn't that enoughto get people's backs up? Our tiny island is full to bursting point. our health service cannot cope, and our taxes keep going up and up to pay for the extra strain on our resourses. We the taxpayers pay for the immigrants to live here, and our own people are penalised.

And who exactly determines which answers are racist or hateful? A large majority of Americans are against ILLEGAL immigration, does that make all of them racists.

I am an American citizen, born and raised here. I look and sound just like any other white guy form Central USA. I am also a legal resident of Mexico. (Near Guadalajara)
Most of the Americans, in my opinion, have had their views of immigration twisted by our government and the media. They resort back to "just having a problem with the Illegal ones"... Throughout American history, the population of legal citizens has "picked on" the newcomers when they showed up in vast amounts. The Irish, the Italians, look what they did to the Africans!!!! (I know that the Africans didn't come here on their own!!)
I think that it really boils down to the fact that change brings out fear in the weak!
Look, if an illegal immigrant wants to live in the states, and then do so by becoming a United States Citizen, or by going through the proper means to be here legally!
I would not be able to spend the time that I do in other countries if I just showed up on the border and snuck in!!!
I would be arrested and jailed and/or deported. No matter what I look like

The key word here is ILLEGAL - it doesn't mean if it is about immigration, underage drinking, underage smoking - IT IS ILLEGAL!
WHY does everyone think everything is so much about racism?
Also, since you asked about ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION - do you have the facts?
There are more than 12 million illegal immigrants in the USA.
Did you know they can collect Social Security, Disability, ALL PAID FOR BY OUR HARD EARNED TAX DOLLARS.
I have worked for over 35 years (first job the on my 16th birthday paying taxes) - SO YES I get a little TICKED to say the least that these ILLEGAL immigrants reap the benefits of all AMERICANS and there HARD WORK AND THE TAXES WE PAY.
So for all of you that will be 18 on election day in November 2008 - think of that when you VOTE. If you are not voting - DON't WHINE ABOUT IT!
