I know the feeling. I am 59 and was a CPA and couldn't land a job as a bookkeeper for a couple of years.
If you have some experience go to Account temps and work as a temp a few times to give you recent experience. I did that then took a temp to hire job then got a job I liked. It pays less than my education and experience warrents but it is what I got and I will retire after this so it doesn't matter.
You could start your own business and offer services to tiny companies a few hours a month each.

Well, it used to be that age was a factor, but with all the new laws against age discrimination, and the fact that companies are now valuing experience, maturity and dependability, I wouldn't be too discouraged about your age. In fact, it's illegal to even ask your age when you interview, so don't bring it up yourself. If you hold your age pretty well, it will keep them guessing and I don't think it will be as much a factor.
In fact, last year, when I was 57, I landed a six figure job (in the IT industry) based on my experience. It wasn't even in my primary field (which is more business oriented than IT), but I sold them on the fact I could hit the ground with my feet running and be productive immediately due to my extensive experience in related areas. Of course, it also helped that I did my homework and researched the company extensively before my interview.
What I would do if I was you is take a job with a temporary job agency. Accountants are always in demand and I think you could get placed as a temporary pretty easily. This would also give you the ability to make contacts. I've many times seen temporary employees do such a good job that they are hired permanently.
Overall, it sounds like you need some good, well rounded advice about job searching, resumes, interviewing, etc. You might want to check out this link: http://www.job-search-steps.com
Best luck.

because of your age. in hate to say it but you're being discriminated against because of your age. even though im sure you're just as or even more qualified, you;re too old in some actually most employers eyes.unfair and ignorant i know. most look at it as if you'll be needing more time off than younger parties, you;re close to retirement age and in some cases you bring too much maturity to the table, and some bosses dont want their subordinates older than them because they feel their subordinates will think they are over the boss because they are older.
