JEFF, You need to visit churches and find one that you really feel like you are 'home' in.
Baptism comes after you invite Jesus into your heart.
Baptism is to show your friends and the public that you have laid down the OLD Jeff and you are willing to turn your back on sinning and your old ways .
It involves water--representing the old man going under water and the new man emerging.
May God be with you. Talk to God just like you talk to friends.
He IS your friend.
He is an AWESOME GOD, Jeff!

I haven't been to church in a while either, but the act of baptism by water is very simple. Some church houses have a tub, some go to a river or lake and the preacher asks you a few things letting you assure yourself of why you are doing this, he says a little prayer then says "I baptise you in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit" and dunks you under.
Depending on your religious upbringing, there is also baptism by fire...meaning by the Holy Spirit touches your soul.
Having said all this, the Bible specifically states that in order to get to Heaven, you must be saved....accept Jesus Christ as your savior, repent of your sins (and mean it). Jesus said 'No one comes to the Father except thru me'.

Visit some local churches and get involved.
If you know you have been saved, talk to the minister about being baptised. I am sure they would be glad to do it. Our minister would, as long as you state that you have accepted Christ as your Saviour.

I was baptized in the four square gospel church in 1974 but am now Wicca. I think I became "unbaptized" when I changed my mind set and decided to follow a different path. To me being baptized didn't mean as much to me as it does to others and I didn't hold much stock in it. I already knew what I really was and so didn't feel baptism applied to me. However, you can just "unbaptize" yourself by admitting that you no longer want to be baptized. As simple as changing your mind.

go to this site:
www.willowcreek.com
and find a church in your area to call and talk to a pastor about baptism.
It's great that you want to take this step and publicly show that you are a believer!
Blessings to you!
