He that loveth his life shall lose it; and he that hateth his life in this world shall keep it unto life eternal.

so are we supposed to hate our life or something?

The word "life" here is literally the word "soul".

It is one of several words translated "life" in the Bible and means particularly the life of a person subjectively - the "I" "Me" "Mine" of a person as distinct from anyone else.
It is really saying that the selfish person , the one who is more concerned about his interests than anyone else's, including God's, is destined to lose everything he held so dear (namely, himself), because he has chosen to make himself the center of the universe, he will in fact lose his very "self" because he will be excluded from the Kingdom of God and suffer the loss of his own soul in hell.

love life and the experience given - accept, learn, change, grow - and this life and its particularities will come and go without scar, pain or stain. The perceiver will "lose" it (or perhaps one could say 'loose' it or forgive and be free from it into truth, peace, and true perception).
hate life, or do not emotionally forgive the experience as the the perceiver and the particularities of this life will suffer on in the mind of the beholder eternally or the perceiver shall "keep it unto life eternal."
remember, nothing is forgotten (all moments make an impression on our consciousness) and the eternal is experienced in all moments so we each must face this perfect nature of our mind.

This one verse alone does not relay the message he was giving in it's entirety. What Jesus was saying is that the person who loves their life on this earth MORE than him or the Father in heaven will lose it, and the one who hates the ways of this life and does all that is necessary in his name will gain eternal life.

It means that if we love our life...we lose it by giving our lives to God and his purposes, we do not seek our own will and our own worldly lusts any longer. A person who hates his life continues in his sinful nature and does not see eternal life. I think that this scripture is the one that the "spin doctor" preacher like Jim Jones uses to get people to kill themselves.

(John 12:25) 25 He that is fond of his soul destroys it, but he that hates his soul in this world will safeguard it for everlasting life.

THIS IS WHAT JESUS WAS TALKING ABOUT.

Jesus Christ warned against seeking glory from men. He scathingly denounced the hypocritical religious leaders of the Jews who liked to pray standing in the synagogues and on the corners of the broad ways to be visible to men and who loved the prominent places at evening meals and the front seats in the synagogues. He pointed out that they had already received in full their reward, that which they loved and desired, namely, honor and glory from men; therefore no reward at all was due them from God. (Mt 6:5; 23:2, 5-7; Lu 11:43) The record reads: "Many even of the rulers actually put faith in [Jesus], but because of the Pharisees they would not confess him, in order not to be expelled from the synagogue; for they loved the glory of men more than even the glory of God."-Joh 12:42, 43; 5:44.

In speaking to his disciples, Jesus said: "He that is fond of [phi·lon´] his soul destroys it, but he that hates his soul in this world will safeguard it for everlasting life." (Joh 12:23-25) A person who prefers to protect his life now rather than to be willing to lay down his life as a follower of Christ will lose out on everlasting life, but one who considers life in this world as secondary, and who loves Jehovah and Christ and their righteousness above everything else, will receive everlasting life.

We are here on earth temporarily, and shouldn't become obsessed with worldly things, possessions, etc. It will all end. But, if you focus on things spiritual and increase your wealth in heaven, you will grow and gain more for all time. Don't hate your life, just worldly things. Jesus said it, I believe it.

The people of this age who value God above all else, including their own life, and seek out his will, rather than the lusts of the flesh, will keep their lives in the age to come (i.e. obtain resurrection).

25The man who loves his life will lose it, while the man who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life.

Here is the same verse but in the NIV version.

Basically this means that if you love your life more than Jesus, you will lose your life. But if you love Jesus more than you love yourself, you will gain eternal everlasting life.

No. Love life and all it's sweetness. Remember the Father first. It is all a passing show.
