Some of the answers here really show how proud they are of their independence from God:
"we don't need a non-existent thing to tell us how to live our life"
"We are here to laugh at the odds and live our lives so well that Death will tremble to take us."
"It's all about enjoying your life and making the best of it, not about devoting your life to magical pixie fairies."
This is why they reject God; they don't want God to be the master. They want to be their own master. But, of course, there is no purpose of life for the atheist as stated by this noted atheist:
“Unless you assume a God, the question of life’s purpose is meaningless.” –Bertrand Russell

My purpose is to LIVE and contribute the the betterment of humanity. My purpose is to be an enduring optimist, and to live this life as best as i possibly can. My purpose is to give happiness to those in my life who need it, and to love and cherish this life before it is lost.
A 'guardian spirit' or 'deity' is not needed to truly love and appreciate this life. The sheer variety of life on our planet, all the different people who are even more special for their differences, all these are enough to be truly happy in life.
And, this question is an indication that you need to make more varied friends. Befriend some people of differing beliefs (even atheists), and then maybe you can be a little more enlightened about those who are a bit different to you. =)

1- The purpose of life is to live it to the fullest rather than wasting it by hoping for a better life after death.
2- When we get depressed, we seek help.
3- the earth came to be because of the Bigbang.
Now, move on to bigger and better things!

How do you not get depressed & wish to die because you're suddenly staring the truth in the face- there is no excuse for god or for you! If you really think that obtusely then you should have your own church in the bedroom closet where no one will have to know about it.
I spend my time wondering about a lot of things, but where we came from isn't one of them.
Isn't it enough that we're HERE?

Why would I wish to die? It's human instinct to want to live, to perpetuate life. That's why people invented religion, because they want to live forever.
I'm in no hurry to go back to not existing. (Where do Christians think they were before they were? They didn't exist. Much like what happens when they die) Anyways, I love my fiancee, I love my parents and brother, I love my friends. Hockey, soccer, football, reading, writing, and laughter, who in their right mind would want to leave all of that? Not me. I'll stick around and enjoy life until its end.

Its called living. The only time I get mildly depressed is when I see Theists squandering their lives in the futile belief that somehow there is more to come after they die, when all evidence points to the contrary.
EDIT.
We know how the Earth came to be as we all went to high school.

Come join us, then you'll understand. It's all about enjoying your life and making the best of it, not about devoting your life to magical pixie fairies.
