Hey Dude check with a lawyer, there are so many misconceptions out here it is crazy. Ohio can pardon you if you did not have a violent felony but the ATF sometimes has a different idea. You really need to see a lawyer or get real legal advice cuz 5 years in the pen if you are a felon and are not supposed to have a gun.

Being a convicted felon myself from Ohio, I know that after 7 years, with no criminal convictions, a convicted felon can petition the court of sentencing for the ability to possess a firearm. Hunting is legal in Ohio for felons, as long as the weapon is no able to be reloaded automatically, or is not a firearm (Bow). But dude up there has good advice, get an attorney, well worth the cleared record. ;)

If you are talking about a conventional gun, i.e., modern rifle, then no you can't. Federal law prohibits a felon from owning or POSSESSING a gun.

However, federal law does not consider a black powder muzzle loader to be a "gun" under that restriction.
But, this too, can be a trap. Recently, here in Wyoming, a felon asked a gun shop clerk and a county deputy if he could buy and hunt with a black powder muzzle loader. He was told yes. Then when he went hunting he was arrested by a game warden. The court held that the Wyoming State law made no distinction between modern guns and black powder guns.

So, if you get yourself a black powder rifle, you probably won't violate any federal law, but you had better make sure what your state law says.

You cannot possess any firearm AT ALL in the state of Ohio if you are a convicted felon, or otherwise listed under the weapons disability law(violent domestic assaults etc.) Yes you could try to get your record expunged. However, you can still legally hunt in Ohio as a felon if you choose to archery hunt, as bows are not legally defined as firearms, Even crossbows are legal. A black powder or muzzle loader is still considered a firearm.

You should already have been informed of this. As a convicted felon it is not legal for you to possess a firearm anywhere in the U.S. Therefore it would not be legal for you to hunt with a gun in any state.

I believe that as a felon you are not allowed to posses a firearm. This includes for hunting.

If you've cleaned up your act, you can get most of your rights restored. Talk to a lawyer.

Under the federal stars federal laws supercede all state and local lwas. Therefore non violation felons are ( have) the right to arms .. as such the arms are to ffa. Or cca class as of musselloader. Blackpowder any firearm or weapon of such purchasable w of registration there of..inhibits the right to use for hunting onky. Even Canada serves that bylaw.. ( if we let jealous individuals inhibit the rights which we have left including non felons we will not ever be aloud a fork.. even though the federal law states even officers not residing in that state are to surender arms at their local state police. I guess we don't all know the laws were preaching. Example a police officer from Ohio can not carry in I Diana it's a felony.. and such.. only fbi or federal law can carry outside tere valid state so next time u see a crooked cop carry when in another state u should call local police.. then we won't have so many people thinkn they know what their talkn about.
