ok...a month ago, my tooth was hurting and the dentist says it's an abscess tooth and said i have to have a root canal...they gave me this antibiotics for ten days, three times a day....after the ten days, my tooth doesn't hurt anymore, i can bite with it and it won't hurt.so far my tooth is just fine, it's not getting loose, it's not getting black, my cheeks aren't swollen, i haven't seen any problems..now, my root canal is scheduled a week from now...should i still take the root canal?....my dad says that if it doesn't hurt then it's fine and that it is more important to save your original tooth than to have a jacket...should i still have the root canal done?

The dentist gave you antibiotics to take care of the swelling and to make sure it doesn't get worse. I had a root canal when I was 14 (with braces, mind you, and a rather twisted toothroot.) and I still have the original tooth. All they do is take out the nerves in the root of the tooth, then fill it up with the stuff they put in cavaties..They don't put a cap over it. It's relatively painless so long as they give you enough novacaine. You can tell them to give you more if you still feel pain during the operation. I was even able to sleep through mine, that's how painless it was. For about 1 week afterward, I was careful to take a steady dose of Advil liquidgels. My tooth has been fine ever since. I definitely say go for it.

The antibiotics cleared the existing infection, which is why the tooth stopped hurting. But sooner or later this infection will return; take care of it now. A root canal appt is only to remove diseased nerve tissue from your tooth, the tooth will then be filled but will otherwise be the same. Most dentists do suggest crowning (capping) a tooth that has had a root canal in order to protect from breakage, but this usually does'nt have to be done immediately. Leaving the tooth as is will leave a source of infection lingering in your mouth, which is unhealthy.

I don't know if the antibiotics would clear up the abcess, but i would probably go ahead with the root canal. I had my first root canal 4 days ago in mexico and it was an almost totally painless proceedure. The only pain was a slight prick of the needle when they numb you but other than that it was a piece of cake! No more tooth pain- whew what a relief!

You may be able to go for a week, month, maybe 3 months but rest assured -- the pain will return.
When it returns it's usually worse. Since you have an appt. scheduled it's probably best to take care of it now.
They always have the worst timing -- returning when you're away from home, on vacation or during the holidays.

I speak from experience, have had about four root canals.

you have to have your appoint ment for your tooth, becuase you dont feel pain just because antibiotics relived your abcess and infection but still the way for the bacterias to goes inside the root is open so you will have infection soon again you have to go to root canal treatment to close the way and you can have your tooth not all endodontic treatments must have jacket replace

Yes even though your tooth doesnt hurt anymore doesnt mean that its still not bad. I would get it done and over with now, instead of waiting and then it hurt you in the very near furture.
