the list is endless!! ar 15 type rifles are made be many different company's. most good, some excellent, a few junk ( like HESS manufacturing)
I like DPMS and Olympic arms a lot for finished firearms. But when building my own rifle, I use M&A parts inc (www.MAPartsinc.com) I have used their parts abd kits extensively and love em. If you purchase one of their kits to go with your own stripped lower receiver, you get all the quality parts you need to assemble a really nice rifle, plus, the upper assembly comes already assembled, head spaced and test fired. Best yet are the quality of their barrels. And, it is all put together by armorers trained by the U.S. military.
But, as I said, there are a lot of good manufacturers out there. These are just my favorites.
Anyway, it's a love hate relationship with this family of rifles. A lot of people hate em, some with cause, some just because they don't understand them and their limitations. Others love them.
Hope this helped.

There are plenty of AR-15 makers out the wazoo. Armalite, Bushmaster, Colt, Fulton Armory, Olympic Arms, and so on. An AR-15 is just a semi-automatic only M-16 for civilian use, but the AR-15 comes in more than just the M-16 style. There are also AR-15's with bull barrels and flat tops with scope mounts and Flat tops with scope mounts, bipods, and rubber handguards. It's a good choice. Another type of assault rifle would be the M1A series made by Springfield Armory and Fulton Armory that are just semi-automatic only M-14 style rifles that come in several different variations.

RE:
What assault rifles are available for civilian purchase?
I know "civilian assault rifles" don't exist, due to the selective fire issue. However, I'm interested in purchasing a rifle that resembles a popular assault rifle. I had an SKS in the past and enjoyed it very much, but I would now prefer something more similar to an M16. Please...

Plenty of good info from all the answers so far, but last weekend I bought a Smith & Wesson- M&P 15. It's a semi auto version of the military's M4. I am very happy with this purchase. Smith & Wesson firearms are among the best.

There are alot of semi-auto rifles to choose from, armalite makes a number of models based on the Colt M-16 (for that matter so does Colt, the armalites are just cheaper). Best bet is to check out a local gun shop and see what they have.

Sounds like you are looking for a standard AR-15. There are plenty of them out there.
Look into DPMS for a quality rifle without breaking the bank.
Hope that helps.

there once was a guns shop near my house who i believe now does business by internet only. the name was Fairly Honest Don's Machine Gun Parlor. 98% of his store was hard to find military surplus ammo and guns and oddities. last time i was in his store i purchased an AR-15 for my girl and a mini 14 post ban for my neighbor and a rizzly single shot 50 cal for myself. he had many assualt style weapons for sale. everything from police PM-80 9mm to AK-47's SKS's and many others. in my state (Oregon) it is legal to purchase and own fully automatic weapons if you have a permit for such. i know he offered full autos i never bought one. the ones i listed above were are semi auto and i dont think they could be made full either. you might check to see if he still has his online store. i dont know what the web address would be. maybe try the name Fairly Honest Don's Machine Gun Parlor or just parts of the name. i know that gun shows often have a great variety of sought after actual military assualt rifles. i have a friend in Grants Pass Oregon that deals in the M-1 garand. a full/semi auto 30-06 assualt rifle used in Vietnam i think. i can pass his info on to you if you really want to find something. let me know.

Unless the founding fathers could tell the future, this makes no sense. When the 2nd amendment was written the only guns available were muskets and we had no military or navy, towns didn't have sheriffs and there were no state marshalls.
