I'm thinking of getting one for my nephew for Christmas. I want one that takes decent pix, but also one that's sturdy for him and that I won't feel too badly if he does break it (i.e., nothing too expensive). SD Card compatibility is a plus. The Fisher Price kid-tough camera, looks too basic for his age, and I'm reading that the Disney ones aren't very good either...

This one has an image stabilizer on it for his "new to digital" hands, it's inexpensive and it should hold up...

I am thinking of getting our almost 8 YO grandson a digicam for Christmas. He used my D80 at the zoo and actually got some decent images. I agree, the Fisher Price is a bit young for a "sophisticated" boy of 7! Hopefully he will understand the importance of taking care of it.

I am going to look at the entry level Canon, Nikon and Kodak models, see which one feels sturdiest, and read some reviews at www.dpreview.com and www.stevesdigicams.com. Someone said the shutter lag won't matter. I don't know, I think a youngster might find the lag time to be frustrating. Lag times have improved in the last couple of years, even in point and shoots. Good luck in finding the perfect camera!

From experiance, I don't think a kid can really take care of a camera or other expensive electronics. But honestly I do really like that fisher price one, I thought it was rvery cute. I'd say go for a cheap MP3 player or something.

The disney ones aren't good. I would go to walmart and get one of the $75 ones. They take sd cards and regular batteries. They're pretty easy to use (even if it was hard, seven years olds now-adays are smarter that we ever were) and are pretty durable. The only dissadvantages are things a kid doesn't care about= slow response time, average picture quality, uglyness. other than that i would go that rout. good luck.

If you can still find the Fujifilm FinePix A500, it should be about $89- 5 megapixels, 3X optical zoom.
