Turns out Turkey - 99% Sunni Muslim - recognized Israel way back in 1949 and the two countries have had excellent relations all along. I thought the Israeli line was that Muslim support for Palestinians was just a matter of religious bigotry,i.e. hostility to Jews borne of Islam itself. If that's the case - Muslims hate Jews, hence the aversion to Israel - and it's a question of Islamic religious bigotry, then how do we explain the tight relations between Turkey and Israel?

I didn't know that. Evidently the media has misled us as to the actual reasons for Arab hostility to Israel. It has always been my understanding that supposedly Muslims considered a jewish state on traditionally Muslim soil to be an affront. But I did check and you are right. Sunni Muslim Turkey is Israel's closest ally after the U.S. So none of the antipathy has anything to do with Islam or it's teachings. Good question - and a good point raised.

For centuries, Turkey has been a country where Jews went when they had to flee persecution elsewhere. And in the 1930s, under Ataturk, the new Turkey sheltered Jews fleeing from Nazi persecution.
Turkey is mostly Sunni Muslim, but is not ethnically Arab, so this may make a difference in their relationship with Jews.
Although Ataturk intended a very secular society (he forced the country into non-religious dress, for instance), there remains discrimination against non-Muslims and an unwillingness to look objectively at history. For instance, it is illegal in Turkey to acknowledge the genocide of the Christian Armenians by Ottoman Turks.
And now, Islamist views are becoming increasingly popular in Turkey though, so their relationship with the US and Israel could change after all. I hope this doesn't go to far; I would be sorry to lose Turkey as an ally, imperfect though it may be.

because Turkey is allied to the United States and the U.S. supports Israel. Turkey would risk losing the defensive agreement it has with the US if it went against their policy on Israel or exacerbated the problems in that area.
