I have a question about the things that are on my great uncle headstone, I know that he was awarded these honors from the Korean War: Prisoner of War Medal, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.

the question I have is that on his headstone there is also a PH and I'm wondering if this could mean "Purple Heart"

Uncle Woody was captured in North Korea and was eventually killed as a P.O.W. I'm just interesting in learning more about this

here is a picture of his headstone at the National Cemetery of the Pacific in Hawaii

thanks so much everyone, I was pretty sure it was a Purple Heart, was unaware of the other medals though so thank you, I do know that his last letter home he complained about how "green" the new soilders were and how he had to keep them safe, I think in the end he died for his men.

No problems with keeping his memory alive I'm a genealogist, and know just about everything I can on this man and his family just thought I ask a question to people who are probably more quailifed on this subject than myself, Uncle woody was a great man loved by our family and is still mourned today, he said the military was all he knew so in the end he gave all for it, and trust me all the children in our family know of his sacrifice for this nation.

Whoa! Yes, PH means Purple Heart. But look to the left of that on the same line as the PH. Liutenant Smith received the Bronze Star Medal (BSM) and the Silver Star Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters (SS & 2 OLC)! He was a true American hero.

The line that the PH is on is a list of his combat decorations. PH would stand for Purple Heart.

Your uncle was a true hero. Keep his memory alive so future generations will know who he was and what he did. He served in two wars and was a hero and many today should take a lesson from him.
