I can speak of Santa Barbara - beautiful, expensive, 'affordable' homes are usually small and somewhat older. I do believe there is a building moratorium, so no new subdivisions. Goleta is just north of SB, the homes are a bit more affordable there.

Newport beach...too many tourist.
Santa Barbara...to expensive and too many mexicans

Those 5 cities are all upper class cities and if you have enough money, they are very close in comparison. All will require at least a million bucks for a home.
