Jet engines are fairly simple in principle but rather complex things to build when you consider what they have to do. To build one like that you're going to need access to some rather sophisticated machine tools like CNC mills and lathes. You're also going to have to do a lot of math to figure out RPM versus compression and whatnot. If you want to seriously build one then any good library has the information that you need but beware, it's a LOT of information.

Noise mitigation in jet engines is honestly an extremely nicely researched difficulty. Pratt & Whitney, GE, and Rolls Royce have spent hundreds of thousands on airflow optimization, progressed composites, and accoustic lining. the result's that todays turbofan engines are lots quieter than the turbojet engines used whilst jet powered aviation grew to become into in that's infancy. regrettably, they're nevertheless lots too loud for the traditional community storage. aside from noise, that's advisable to evaluate what your hearth marshall could ought to assert in case you experienced an uncontained failure (explosion) of the engine.

That film was a very clever hoax. More like a blow-torch directed into the open end of a rigged up cylinder and the necessary sound effects added, probably a high power vacuum cleaner or some-such.

(Components needed are clever props, blow-torch or other heat source, sound effects and gullible people).

Turbine blade failure at several thousand RPM will ruin your day. Especially if your sitting next to it when it fails.
