A true mercenary company was Executive Outcomes, but it was disbanded by the South African government in 1999.
However, there are many private security companies like Blackwater. There was even a private Pinkerton agency that did security work for nuclear power plants.

Like DC said, Blackwater is not a private military. It is like any other civilian company that is being cotracted by the military or any other government branch.

They are "private security agencies" not armies. There mission has nothing to do with the military. It is closer or identical to the Federal Marshals or Secret Service. They escort VIP's approved by the Secretary of State in and around Iraq.

Most very large multi national companies have very sophistocated and extensive security forces.
"Under" most of the top 50 nation's governments, there is a pool of ever-changing, job by job, set of operatives. These are the people that get 60% of all ops done in the world done that you never hear about. The problem is, they can only do low profile stuff. I.E. Bin Laden could be in custody in two months if six or seven of these teams were employed to do so. Bad P.R. Most liberals in the country coundn't stomach us hiring guns to do what we need to do.
