There were several Islamic "empires," and although some have decayed others continue on either as nation-states, or as "culture-empires." The highpoint of Islamic culture in the West was roughly a couple of centuries prior to the Renaissance, and perhaps up till WWI. That war effectively destroyed the Ottoman Turkish empire (which became secular after a coup), and splintered the Arabic, Persian, and Indian "flavors" of Islam. We are living with some of those results to this day (history matters!).
Anyway, back to your question. Around 1492, the last of the Islamic states in the West were pushed out of Spain (which became almost entirely Christian). But Islam continued to exist in North Africa and even into the Far East. However, Islamic armies lost a few crucial battles along the way (to Western countries with superior weapons and "brave new economies." That much is still going on, although you can see the process going back several centuries. In a way it's still falling.
There were also corresponding "empires" of various sizes and influence in the middle east and India/Pakistan.
It's much more complicated that that outline suggests. But that's a somewhat rough and poetic answer, from a Westerner (who is very interested in culture in general).

You can't point to one reason that the Ottoman Empire fell. It's like asking what reason caused the Roman Empire to fall. Corruption was a leading factor, though. Islamic regimes have always been extremely susceptible to corruption and bribery.
It actually began to weaken in the 19th century. Some European countries, who had been trying for years to get leverage in Turkish territories, began to exploit those weaknesses, which probably hastened it some what.
European peoples, going back centuries, were upset by how Christians were treated in Muslim lands and so when the Turks came to them for help Europe began a tit-for-tat deal. It was also at this time that you see the first rise of Zionism, which is the desire for the a Jewish homeland. Once the Jews saw a chink in the armor of the Muslim empires, they began to exert pressure as well.
After the war, the Turks really didn't have any energy or resources left to hold together and Britain petitioned to have control of the territory. Their [the Brits] screw ups with that is directly responsible for many of the problems we have in the Middle East today.
