I have a terrier mix breed very smart and trained easily. Adult dogs 2 or 3 years old make for a better first time pet. Try to rescue one from your local shelter

Usually dogs 15-80 pounds are a good weight range to start with. With so many breeds, they all have their own type of personalities along with the individual personalities of the individual dogs. I would go to your friends' homes and play with their dogs, look at the pound for dogs for adoption, read about dogs. In the end, dogs need lots and lots of attention, love and cost lots of money regardless of the type. I absolutely love my dogs. They are the best. A labrador and maltapoo.

It depends what experience you have with animals--do you have a large house? A yard? Will you be gone for 8 hours a day? Do you live in a large city? Do you live in a small town? Does it get really cold where you live? How often do you plan on walking this dog? How often do you plan on grooming this dog? Would you like a large, medium, or small dog? Do want a dog that is indepedent and hard to train or one that is docile and easier to manage? Do you want a gaurd dog or one to welcome all who come near? Do you want a pure-bred dog or a mutt?

It depends on your surroundings and the circumstance. If you have a small house/yard, try a small dog. Or if you have enough area for a big dog get a retriever. Since retrievers are one of the easiest to train, you might want to get one. Or a chihuahua, but there not so easy to train, but easy to take care of. Or if you dont want fur all over the place, get a poodle since they dont shed.

It all depends on your personality and lifestyle. There is an adoption place for dogs where I live and they have a questionairre that helps you figure out what kind of dog would best suite you. I'm sure that there are websites out there that can give you advice. I would also consider looking at dogs that you already like and researching their breed.

check your shelters..yes,there are good breeders and petstores but keep in mind they are out there to make money...animal shelters on the other hand are only concerned that the animal finds a good home, plus they can help you find the perfect match, and educate you on owning a pet and other things....

try looking through foster dog parents to find a dog you are comfortable with and is trained well, a more mellow dog is good for a first time dog, personally i find border collies are mellow, smart, obedient, and lovable
