I actually started in politics in junior high, so I say go for it. The best way to get great experience and learn the most is to start out on local politics. Find out who the Republican candidate for State Representative or State Senator is in your area. It very well may be an incumbent because you live in a strong Republican area (I just moved away from their about 1 year ago.)
Volunteer to do anything they need. This could include literature distribution, phone calls, stuffing mailings, knocking on doors, walking in parades, etc. Don't be afraid to start small and work your way up. I was actually managing congressional races by 21 years old.

Apply to join the Republican Party whose ideals you support, and then offer to be assigned responsibilities. The likely responsibilities as a "Junior " , may be leaflet distribution, serving refreshments, or assisting older members to their seats etc..all of which, are very neccessary functions during political campaigns. Good Luck !
