I own a 2001 New Beetle and I feel very safe in it. You can get safety ratings on several web sites, but I found this one the easiest to understand. This information is for the 2008 models. Pick a trim and see the safety ratings.

I have seen pictures of NBs in accidents that you'd think nobody walked away from. And, yert the people involved walked away with minor scratches.

It handles very well. The short wheel base makes the handling better than similar cars I have driven. My insurance only went up $2 a month when I got it. My other car was 2 years older. They told me it was because of all the extra safety features. There are both front and side airbags. I also have anti-lock brakes. I'm not sure if the brakes are standard, though.

The only time I feel scared as a passenger in my Beetle is when my boyfriend drives. But I would be scared if he was driving a tank :)

Take one for a test drive. That's a good way to see if you like it or not. Also, check this website for lots of good info about New Beetles in general. The forums are the best place to get answers to your questions. You'll have to register to read or post though.

Edit: Check out these videos. You can choose make & model. Watch a few different ones to compare.

i could say definite! There are structures that help forestall injuries like ABS and traction administration. Then there are structures that shop you secure in case you get in a injury. Drivers and passenger airbags, pyrotechnic seat belts to maintain you on your seat, the rear headrests will improve up interior the form of a roll over. additionally the front pillars around the windshield are super stable. there's a photograph of a Ford F150 resting on the "A" pillar of the beetle. The windshield isn't even broken. i won't be able to look to detect it.. Like others have mentioned, a automobile is normally as secure because of the fact the driving force. issues can take place, so get the main secure automobile you are able to.

The best thing to do is to test drive several of them, under various situations: the highway, the freeway, night drives, daytime drives, and in different weather. You should also try it as a passenger. This way, you'll get the feel for it in a hurry. Practice fast shifting and braking, and turning. This will show you how well it handles. Good luck.

I have a beetle that is made into a truck. It was my husbands, but alas the motor has to be put in it. We have owned many VW's over the years and loved each and every one of them. My daughter learned to drive a stick with our 74 golden bug. If you ever get one you'll be hooked, and not want to get rid of them. We got our son into them, and he raced his at the local dragstrip.

funny thing is for 10 years I drove 1960's bugs around and never thought twice about it.
