A creator of a work ought to retain the rights to that work. Hence, copyright laws.

In any academic situation, this can be a more critical issue, since the point of these institutions is to teach the subjects covered. Essays and other papers are ways in which the instructors know if the student has gained the knowledge required to earn the certification or degree offered. If teachers were to accept known plagarized works, they would have no way of knowing if the student actually knows the material, or, only knows how to copy.
