I think that for the most part God is refered to as a him, because that is what people were raised to believe. It is like Jesus being a light skinned man. In the old days that is the only way that people could fit God in their heads. They didn't think about the female aspects of God and How that fit into him. They didn't interpret that man was made in Gods image to mean that woman were made in Gods image too. I think that over time people have started giving it another thought as people have started to relate better to female aspects.

Brahmam has NO gender.A Ship is always refered to as "She" only.Ship has No gender. When Brahmam descends to one level low (Avathaaram) ,is refered to as GOD.With "Free Will" devotees are at liberty to call God as He or She.

But Acharya(the Great Teacher) sri.Sankara says in Soundarya Lahari:- "Nache Devam Devo Na(ha) Kushalu Spanditum Api"= O! Supreme Mother -Among the "Divine forms",I am aware,You are Supreme--because you are Universal Mother--and no body in this world can understand the pain and agony of any peson like a Mother(Mamtha)---Athastvaam Aaraadhyaam Hari-Hara-Virinjadhipirapi Pranam Thum Stotum vaa Kadham Akrutha Punya Prabhavathi"=It is why even the creator(Virinji), Savior(Hari) and Supreme Lord-God(Hara) three masculine aspects of G-O-D=GOD are praying You,and prostating before You--even to have a chance for one to touch Your feet, one should have done a lot of benevolent actions(Punyam) in the previous(akrutha) birth.

Yes the female aspect is there. It is the invisible thread and undercurrent that runs through all scripture. Judaism, Christianity, and Islam is Patriarchal so god must be him. The bible is a prejudiced book.

C. S. Lewis disccussed this in his sci-fi series. If you don't know who he is, he wrote the Lion the Witch and the Wardobe of the Chronicles of Narnia and best friend to J.R. Tolkien writer of the Lord of the Rings.

He said angels as well as God are masculine without being male, physicaly gendered.

God refers to Himself in His scriptures as masculine. But I have heard that one of the many names of God in the original Hebrew found in the Old Testament is "the many breasted one" or something like that. I cannot confirm this at this time. But this is in reference I believe to the Holy Spirit who meets the needs of the followers of God, by supllying us with lifes needs: power to get food and shelter and so on.

Simply the limits of our language. God is neither man nor female he tells us not even to begin to imagine what he looks like as we would never come close.

Surely you don't think a woman would be that violent, jealous, controlling, and ego-maniacal...
