The kind that screw into a regular bulb socket are called compact fluorescent bulbs. Normal fluorescents are tubular, either straight or circular.

Bulb...that would be the shape. See tulip bulbs.
Where the word light and bulb came from are so ancient I doubt anybody knows for sure.
