My son is in the Navy Intelligence program and I am a concerned parent, so all the negative remarks are not needed.

If your service is required, 100%.

We're not living in the old days where people "did the Reserves" to make their pickup truck payment and piddled away a weekend a month and two weeks in the summer.

My husband has been in the reserves since 1997. His first deployment was in 2003 and is leaving again this weekend for the Middle East. So for 6 years no deployment, and now we are looking at our second deployment within 3 years. He hasn't even left the states yet and we are already preparing ourselves for at least one more deployment before he's able to retire. Ask you son if he's in a 'four-year mob cycle'. If so, his unit is deployable every fourth year. Hope this helps.

It depends on your rate, your rank, and what unit you belong to.

Some units will not deploy to the Middle East, but to stateside bases. Others, like boat units and Seabees, deploy to Kuwait and Iraq and more frequently than others.

There is always a chance that an individual could be mobilized for a specific duty. I was mobilized to Kuwait in 2005 and was asked to volunteer for the same duty for an upcoming deployment this spring. However, if I were to deploy with my unit, it would be to Washington state.

I was attached to a reserve destroyer escort in 1961.
Got called up, as did the entire crew.
Got to see the whole Cuban Missile Crisis from very close. Also got a nice tan down there in GTMO. And ten months worth of retirement points, for which I am now very grateful.

A VERY VERY high chance. We are in the middle of a war, with the chance of even more problems with other countries.

If you are worried about fullfilling your military obligations, you have no business in the military, or being an officer.
