A fever is a body's natural way of fighting an infection..they aren't the worst thing. A trip to the ER seems a little drastic...his fever is only 102. If he doesn't have any trouble sleeping, and doesn't complain his ear hurts, then he doesn't have an ear infection, and if he's not coughing, he doesn't have pneumonia. Sometimes, kids just get a fever when they get a cold.
If the fever increases, you have trouble getting it down with a combo of ibuprofin and acetominophin, or lasts for more than 3 days, then by all means, take him to his regular pediatrician.

If it is a virus there is nothing a doctor can do. They do not need antibiotics. But if mine have a temp it is uaually becasue of either toncillitis or an ear infection. These do need antibiotics. If they are not complaining of a sore throat or anything then I would give it 48hrs with paracetomol and rest. If it is a virus it would normally be getting better and if not I would call the doctor. If they complain of pain I call straight away as it is always an infection of some sort. You know your own child.Do what you feel is best and don't worry what you mum thinks. Who's child is it? It is not like you have to tell her.
By the way. Just take his temp once. It doesn't really matter what the reading is as a temp is a temp. My doctors these days don't worry too much about taking a temperature as it doesn't change things knowing the exact reading

My mom is a nurse and my son, now 3, runs very high fevers! They can range anywhere from 102-105!! Nothing gets them down! Just give him 1/2 tylenol and 1/2 childrens motrin to get the fever down- the combo usually brings it down at least some if not all. Let him stay under a ton of covers to sweat it out (that works great) and make sure he drinks lots of fluids! Gatorade or pedialite is best. Fevers are always high at night. My son would run his really high fevers, I would get nervous that nothing got them down, take him to the ER, the doctors could never get it down and release us b/c he was not dehydrated, and in the morning it would be gone! That night, it would come back! I would only worry if he is dehydrated or it lasts for more than a few days.

Fevers are kind of a good thing, they are the bodies way of trying to kill the infection. Earlier this year, my youngest son ran a fever that nothing would even remotely touch and I took him to the doctor the second day. And then the doctor wanted him back the 4th day for a follow up. She said that if he ran one for 10 days in a row and nothing helped it that it could be a rare disease and it was. I didn't wait the 10 days though, the internet said 5 days so I took him to the ER on a Saturday and he was admitted for treatment of Kawasaki's Disease. Don't mess around too much though, some children have febrile seizures.

i would wait, my daughter went into the office with 103 temp and they gave her motrin and said she had a viral infection and sent us home.
if you give him motrin and he seems to be okay after an hour then wait it out and see if he gets better. if he starts to vomit or diarrhea then call the doctor.
just make sure he is drinking lots of fluids eating doeswn't really matter but fluids he needs so he doesn't get dehydrated.
a doctor won't really do anything anyways if your son just has a fever, believe me i've ran in many times with my first daughter for it. jsut wait it out and keep him comfy.

Keep an eye on the temp. If it goes up, especially after giving motrin get medical help because it will be higher after the motrin wears off. If you have an immedicate care center in your area, call and see if they think baby needs to come in.

I think the longest I would wait would be over night, if his fever doesn't break by the morning take him into the ER.
