Some more specific questions:

Do you thank people who take the time to thoughtfully answer your questions?

Do you normally thank people who hold a door open for you?

Do you normally thank waiters/waitresses and bagboys/baggirls?

When you call a company, do you thank the represenatitve after the conversation is finished?

It seems to me that social conventions surrounding the use of "thanks" are changing. If you answer any of the questions above, please explain why or why not.

Thanks everyone!

All of your responses are very thoughtful and well-reasoned. Thanks for your time and thoughts.

Incidentally, I noticed that all of the people who have responded thus far appear to be women (and I would actually call you ladies - a term that I reserve for women with manners).

Generally, I've noticed that women are usually more polite than men. Maybe that's due to socialization?

These are all great answers, and I don't think I'm able to choose a "best" answer among them, expecially for such an open-ended question.

Thanks again for everyone's input,

Jimmy

Yes to all the questions. People sometimes complain that I say thank you too much. I try not to go overboard; but I guess it bothers some people.

absolutely I thank people! And I even smile at folks, say from the car when they've let me have the parking spot. It such a little thing, but it means so much - it means: I respect you enough to take the time to acknowledge you and what you did.

I thank everyone who is helpful in any way. It is just the proper thing to do. It makes people's days when you take just that moment to say thank you and it makes you a better person for offering it. Just doing it makes me happy that I could offer it. People who assume others are doing things just for their benefit will not be given the same good service in their future encounters. You are remembered for how you respond in all things.

Of course! It shows a sign of respect. I say thanks to all the questions you asked above. Why? Well, I think it would be just plain rude to not say anything. They took the time to speak with you or hold the door for you. They showed respect for me, why won't I give it in return?

Edit: You're very welcome, Jimmy.

Yes to all of them because it's polite to thank people if they do something nice for you and also it's the right thing to do.

Yes I do. That is the way I was raised. Please and thank you.
We also had to show respect to our elders with a Mrs. or Mr in front of their name. You couldn't just say yes. It has to be yes ma'am or yes sir.

Yes to all questions and the reason for all questions is because it is polite to thank.........Wouldn't you want to be thanked if any of those questions refered to you?
