Some more specific questions:
Do you thank people who take the time to thoughtfully answer your questions?
Do you normally thank people who hold a door open for you?
Do you normally thank waiters/waitresses and bagboys/baggirls?
When you call a company, do you thank the represenatitve after the conversation is finished?
It seems to me that social conventions surrounding the use of "thanks" are changing. If you answer any of the questions above, please explain why or why not.
Thanks everyone!

All of your responses are very thoughtful and well-reasoned. Thanks for your time and thoughts.
Incidentally, I noticed that all of the people who have responded thus far appear to be women (and I would actually call you ladies - a term that I reserve for women with manners).
Generally, I've noticed that women are usually more polite than men. Maybe that's due to socialization?

These are all great answers, and I don't think I'm able to choose a "best" answer among them, expecially for such an open-ended question.
Thanks again for everyone's input,
Jimmy
