I do like setting up home theater system 7.1 and highly suggest it if you have the room for it. But if not... with the speakers you have. I believe 5.1 will sound great.

As for as a good receiver... Pioneer makes a THX Select II Certified receiver (VSX-1017TXv)right in your price range. It has 2 HDMI inputs. I like this unit over the Denon as the remote is way friendlier. But their is a draw back. It makes you run a digital audio cable for audio instead of processing it from the HDMI. They claim they do this to the lower end receivers so you will buy the higher end models.

Here's a link to the Pioneer.

Yamaha builds a model called the HTR-6060. This unit is just outside of your price range (but a good shopper can find it well within you price range). It's not THX but it's packed with features. The remote is easy to use and program to control other pieces in your system. Gets audio from the HDMI inputs. The HDMI is ver1.2a... this is better than the Pioneer.

I hope this helps you.
Let me know if you have any other question?

Klipsch is not only an amazing brand but the prices are fairly decent too. I have JBL and if I had the money I would totally upgrade to Klipsch. I think it is better in not only clarity but way better in price compared to Energy brand speakers. I'm not sure about the sub but I'm sure it will be good and satisfying for movie and music experience being a 12". This is for sure a pretty nice deal =)

Those small speakers will work well with just about any brand of receiver. They are not very demanding.

I like either Yamaha or Denon. They both have mid-range receivers for about $500. If you look at Sony - only look at the ES receivers. There are some Pioneer and Harmon units that are good, but there are some crappy receivers from these companies.
