in canada you need a PAL (to purchase or own a firearm) for anything over 500fps because it is considered a firearm, and I really cba to get one. I have a crosman phantom 500 (looks really similar to a quest except its plastic) and it does fine, i'm just wondering the range of effectiveness

You don't have enough gun with a 490fps .177 to effectively and humanely take small game(rabbit/squirrel/etc) . Limit yourself to frogs and backyard safaris(bugs) you should be fine.

It has been my experience that you need 6fpe and proper hunting pellets to reliable take small game(rabbit/squirrel/etc).

.177 - 8.2gr - 490fps = 4.37fpe

Your .22 should be okay, but only at very short range.
.22 - 14.5gr - 490fps = 7.73fpe

Wow! That's way slow for a 177. That's hardly any power. I wouldn't use one of my 1000fps 177s on a rat past 30 yards or so, at 500fps I think we are talking under 10 yards if you are expecting it to do anything except cause irritation and injury. Sorry, not enough gun.

Depends on what you are shooting. Paper targets? 50-75 feet. Squirrels? Maybe 10-15 feet, with a head shot.

For something shooting that fps, I would keep it at about
20 yards, if you're planning on going for pests. Beyond that
it'll be pushing a one shot kill. If hit in the vitals.

Personally I wouldn't shoot anything further than 30 yards tops.
But shoot it at different known yardages and see what you feel comfortable with.
