I don't think our place in the cosmos has lost significance or meaning as much as it has increased our perspective of how we fit in the universe. We have increased our knowledge about certain things, such as astronomy, but I don't feel that it has decreased or diminished humans having a purposeful place in the scheme of things.
I believe that we are not the only intelligent species in the universe. Currently there have been more than 200 extrasolar planets that have been discovered orbiting around other stars. What was thought impossible or improbable years ago, have turned out to be true.
We are important for the fact that we are here, and we have a privileged position being an intelligent species. Out of the millions of species that have appeared on Earth, past and present, we are the only one from this planet who has sent space probes, manned and unmanned, to explore space. No other species on Earth has done this. We are as much explorers just as caretakers of the Earth.

We may be IT for our solar system, but I highly doubt were IT for the entire universe. To assume were the only intelligent life in the universe is as arrogant as the question as to why aliens haven't landed on the White House lawn if they existed - why not Buckingham Palace, or more probably, NASA?

i suppose its because we are intelligent enough to think about these things, and as far as we know we are the only similar beings. we are the only civilaisation that we know of( i keep saying 'that we know of', does that suggest that were not advanxced enough to see are further and find out?) i think we see our selves as important for the reason (as well as our arrongance) that on our planet we are about the only organisms to take this genetic route. really, if you think, other animals (like dogs, cats, deer, cattle etc...) are intelligent ,and what we would find intelligent life forms, yet we are much more intelligent, yes these animls survive but not as well as us, because of our opposable thimbs we can build seltrer, and the risk of us dying is much lower than other organisms. however, in the scheme of things in the universe, we may be nothing special (a theory is that life was a complete acciedent,a fluke and near impossible for it to happen elsewhere, i do not agree.) but atleast we can appreichate that posisblity.

That's silly. Ours is not the only solar system. To presume that we're significant or insignificant is futile unless every fact that ever was is presented to us, which is a psychological impossibility. Our simple brains couldn't handle that much info and still retain basic function.

Err science did, just about, recently. Examination of samples from the tail of a comet (can't remember the name but there is jut the one study) found amino acids (the building blocks of life) that were not of terrestrial origin. So the possibility of life on other planets is more of a probability now.

Biologically we should not be. To walk which most of us do is greatest thing there is. With every step you should fall down, it took the Japanese forty years to do it. Man is the top of the heap, what can not best with strength we will with knowledge. When we go to other planets, what constitutes? What they are looking for is a carbon based life form.

So Yahoo Answers is part of the "IT" as far as intelligent life in the universe is concerned?
Just shoot me now and get it over with. That's depressing!

Until they prove that we are IT for intelligent life forms in the UNIVERSE, I don't think it proves anything.
