Where did you get that number? In reality, there is an estimated 4 million illegals crossing the border every year for at least the last 10-12 years that is over 40 million right there.

How Many Illegal Aliens?
>>Government and academic estimates indicate there are nine to eleven million illegal aliens living in the United States. The Center for Immigration Studies estimated the illegal alien population at 10 million as of November 2004. FAIR estimates the illegal alien population to be from 11 to 13 million as of 2005. The Pew Hispanic Center estimates the 2005 population of illegal aliens at 12 million.
An independent estimate by analysts of the bear-Stearns investment firm (“The Underground Labor Force is Rising to the Surface,” Jan, 2005) said the illegal alien population “…may be as high as 20 million people.” This estimate dismisses lower official estimates as being flawed by the non-response of illegal alien to census takers. However, this conclusion misses the fact that the official estimates are instead based on a comparison between the growth in the foreign-born population and new legal immigrant arrivals. This allows the trend in the illegal alien population to be observed despite non-response in the Census.
TIME Magazine in a feature article in 2004 published an estimate of three million illegal aliens arriving each year. However, that estimate was based on a mistaken assumption that a million illegal aliens are being apprehended each year and three times as many avoid apprehension. The actual number of persons apprehended is considerably lower than one million because the same individual often may be apprehended multiple times during the year.
It is difficult to have an exact figure because the illegal nature of their presence prevents any enumeration, but the U.S. Census Bureau estimated 8.7 million illegal aliens were here in 2000, and immigration officials estimate that the illegal alien population grows by as many as 500,000 every year.
In the August 2001 issue of Demography, immigration researchers estimated the current total population of illegal aliens at 7.1 million, of whom 3.9 million were Mexicans. Also in August, a demographer at the Urban Institute issued an estimate that the illegal alien population was 8.5 million, with 4.5 million of them being Mexican.

roughly 20 million
Maria R yes spanish was spoken here before english by explorers from spain so by that logic it should not be a felony for a spaniard to be in mexico illegally right? well guess what it is! And it doesnt matter anyway because it was not the hispanics who made america what it is today. Just look at what a wonderful job they have done in mexico and central america.

About half...20 million and rising at the rate of nearly 1.2 million a year currently by most estimates.
The most conservative estimate is by Homeland security which puts it over 11 million with 6.6 million coming from Mexico.

i dont understand the word "ilegal" as in this United States only the Natives [Indians] are from here, everyone else comes from someplace else! Hispanics have been here ,in what is now the United states since 1565!! Mexicans belong in the North part of this continent more than any European , as they are originally from the new world , in contrast to the Anglos who imigrated from Britain!! , or ireland , Germany etc, because France , Spain , Italy , have strong roots in the new world , long before England!!! So what is the problem, ? And you where are u from? Yes , I know u were born here , ur parents , maybe , but the rest , the great grandpas , where were they from?? Is by 50 cents that English is spoken here! Spanish was spoken first , after the native languages , of couse!!!
