Can a substitute teacher use miles as a tax write off? Driving to different locations each day, some out of city limits.

Since you have no regular place of employment, the substitute teaching is not a temporary assignment and you cannot deduct mileage.

If you travel to a second teaching location on the same day, that mileage between jobs is deductible.

If you teach at one school in the morning, then drive to another school to teach for the afternoon, then the mileage between the two schools could be deductible. But not the mileage to the first school of the day, or home from there if you're just at one school or home from the last school if you are at multiples.

Even if you travel between schools, you can only deduct the mileage if you itemize, and then only the part that's over 2% of the total adjusted gross income shown on your return.

So while the answer isn't quite a flat "NO", it probably might as well be.

No, you can't write that off. It is no different that ANY employed person driving themselves back and forth to work on a daily basis.

Driving from home to your assignment, no, that is commuting and you cannot write it off. If your assignment requires you to use your personal car to travel to different locations within the day AFTER you arrive at the main location, you can write off those miles.
