Hard to tell if he was bad or not.
What we are told is that Ishmael was the illigitimate son of Abraham and a slave girl named Hagar.
Now, God could have closed Hagars womb and made it so she did not conceive. God chose to show Abraham and Sarah that taking matters into their own hands could and would cause much harm.
So, Ishmael was born of this belief that we should "help" God out when we arent getting what we have been promised fast enough for our own pleasure.
God determined what the descendants of Ismael would be, not Ishmael or even Hagar.

You are so right. Not many people know this.
Ishmael was the son of Abraham and the Maiden, since Abraham and his wife Sara at that time could not have a child. But later had Isaac.
And thus Ishmael was trouble and in the line of the Arabs.
I believe that may be the Shiite side of the Muslim.

The Qur'an views him as a prophet (although the KJV in Genesis 21 indicates that Isaac was called not Ishmael). According to the interpretation of certain early Islamic theologians whose view prevailed later, Ishmael was the actual son that Abraham was called on to sacrifice, as opposed to Isaac, however as it is written in the Bible God tested Abraham through the sacrifice of Isaac his only son and heir. The story reflects the same story as given in Genesis where there is an evil older brother and the chosen younger brother. This is evidenced again in Esau and Jacob, where Esau sells his birthright to Jacob for a bowl of lentil soup. Hope this had helped, Blessings

yep the troublesome people that brought the age of enlightenment to europe and brought a new age of thinking in medicine and scince and numbers while the europeans were cutting the foreheads of plague victims expelling the devil with christ while the muslim doctors gave a solution of herbs and medicines that cured sick people.

No, he was not bad. This just shows that if his parents would have trusted God's promise about the multitude generations, this problem would not be present now. They rushed the promise God had given to them and did not wait God to fulfill His promise.
