I posted a question asking whether or not the PS3 Blu-Ray player will play normal DVDs. Everyone said "yes," but also mentioned a "firmware update." What are they talking about? I purchased a 20GB model of eBay (don't even have it yet). What will the firmware update do for me?

And last, I have internet at my home and use a cable modem. Will I still be able to connect my PS3 to the internet if my modem is directly connected to my computer? I don't have a router. Thanks for the help.

If I cannot connect to the internet with my PS3, then how can I get the firmware update?

If I don't get the update, what does that also mean? Do I really need it?

1). PS3 updates improve PS3's operatisonal system, remove buga, add functions (pretty much the same as Windows updates improve PC's work). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Firmware
2). You'll need a router anyway. Get one one with VPN support - they have more functions. Wired one (20GB doen't have wi-fi) will cost you around 35$ - http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2000400028+4025&name=%2425+-+%2450

Firmware is the software that controls the PS3, like the PS3 software. A firmware update will update your PS3 software.

And no, you won't to my knowledge for the second question.
