I plan on taking him to the vet when they open in the morning. Until then can you tell me what it might be causing this?

I took him to the vet and the vet said he has the dog version of strep throat and put him on clavamox (amoxicillin). He said that his eyes were like that from being sick and he was drinking a lot of water because his throat is sore.

If excess drinking is the only symptom it could be early signs of diabetes or kidney failure. Bloodshot eyes may or may not be related.

I know you're anxious to get answers now, but I'm afraid you're more likely to just read a load of unhelpful rubbish on here - wait for the vet.

A vet visit should not be avoided, the bloodshot eyes can very well be caused by allergys seasonal change, drinking water excessfully happens when a dogs eats dry dog food

also this could be the sign of diabetes, sometimes is just that the dogs feel dehydrated, but also they have to make up for the water they lost during the day

but all it could be is \Psychogenic Polydipsia\ which means the dogs is a heavy water drinker

but a vet visit shouldnt be avoided

Your dog may very well have some sort of infection. If you have found that your dog is going outside to urinate more often than normal, or having accidents, it may have a bladder infection. It is good that you are taking it to the vet right away and that you did notice these symptoms. An infection can move pretty quickly, so this is the best thing to do. Until then, make sure your dog has easy access to lots of clean water.

It depends on alot of things. I know a boston terrier that will run around until finally when he lays down his eyes are bloodshot and he wants to drink alot of water. Even the tiniest of scratches could be irritating his eyes. You are definitely right on though, by bring him to the vet!
