lets say a guy went into a "gang",he sell drugs he mugg people and a lot of ghetto kids go to jail a LOT, then what??? nothing...he would just get more street respect and still do the same thing and become more dangerous and later he would get killed in some "gang-war" but if they let him join the military that might turn his life around, coz you know the Military has discipline and all, so instead of just putting them into jail(which won't work anyway), why can't we just accept those mislead people to the military and give them a chance to a better life???

Babe what I am trying to say is that those people's lives are going to trash, why not use them somewhere andf make them do something productive instead of polluting their community

not really into a ghetto, but at least use them, I mean don't you know how many people are doing time right now and how many Billions of dollars we are spending on them so while that is happening why can't we just use them or something

since they like "wars" "guns" and "organizing" so much, why not put them in the front line or at least make them patrol the streets instead(coz I believe that is NOT army work, that is cop work or I-am-a-live-bait work)

So you think that by putting a person who cares only for himself in the military is a good idea, these losers are never going to change and all thats waiting for them is a cold slab in the morgue after they get wasted by either some other street-vermin or from the end of a needle. The military is about teamwork and not there to re educate some anti-social loser who is to dumb to get a real job like any normal person.
This scum just want an easy way to live the fast life at the expense of ordinary peoples hard work.

It would be better if the US rented out former Soviet Prison Camps in Siberia and sent these scum there, a whole lot of nothing but back, breaking work in the forests and swamps of Russia would soon rehabilitate them, after one trip they would be in no hurry to go back.

Indeed, the discipline of a military environment can cause pretty shocking changes for the better in some of the foulest of characters.

But it's a question of integrity here. Do other soldiers really want people who used to profit at the expense of others serving with them? Do these "gangstas" even want to join the military in the first place? Most likely not in both cases.

The problem with drug addicts in the military isn't the fact they're putting illegal substances in their body - it's just that they're addicted. In the Australian Army, recruits are allowed smoke breaks during training because going cold turkey just messes them up. It's not like heroin and cocaine will be dispensed during training to keep drug addicted soldiers sane.

They used to do this. If a boy/guy got in trouble they had a choice of doing time or joining the military. Several guys I went to school with were given the choice.
I'm not sure why or when they stopped that but I'm glad they did.
I have family in the military and I would rather have someone who wants to be there watching their back.

Well....

The Military is not supposed to be a social proving ground. If the idiots you're referring to would be turned around in Service to the Country, there is nothing stopping them from becoming model citizens in civilian life.

Warm regards,
Douglas

Post Script: There are a HUGE number of people who are disadvantaged that DON'T get involved with drugs or gangs....

Let's be honest, would you want this person covering your behind in a jam? I wouldn't. Quite a few thugs join up and learn our weapons training and then take that training back on the street. Either way someone has to WANT to be here in order for the military ideal to take effect. There are already plenty of knuckle heads here that don't want to be. I don't need anymore of those people to have MY back. I want someone who knows the true meaning of shipmate that is willing to put another's life before their own...

I manage a budget of $275K. Can I trust a crack head with that kind of responsibility? I got a troop is "gangsta" and I expect him to respond favorably when I say get on the plane to Iraq for a year or so? Doesn't quite work like that.

Apparently in the US they are getting more criminal record waivers...
for petty offences such as joy riding and marajuana use...

so while this may have in the past barred entry.. now there is a trend that there are far more wiavers being granted.. I saw this on the news.

here is an older article on it
http://www.nytimes.com/2007/02/14/us/14military.html
see also:

But all in all there are always waivers.

Why would we let some punks in our military to possibly hurt innocent people. They have not earned the right to serve. The military is not a social service to turn fvck heads around.

Because they have no honor, no integrity, no code.
How can we expect these guys to cover my *** in a firefight when they would shoot the guy next to him if he was in a different street gang. Sorry, I don't want a drug addict having nerves or some lapse and going crazy because they dont have their drugs and getting me shot. Sorry, I want honorable and decent people who will serve willingly and 100%. Gangsters and drug addicts have no place in the military.

darrell m is more of a criminal in intelligence at least than any of the aforementioned..........but I would have to agree with the asker of the question, this idea may provide some sort of structure and after a tour in Iraq they may have a different attitude in life and possibly better themselves by merging back into their community by making an honest living
