I would never give my child ritalin. The side effects including suicidal tendencies as he ages, etc. are simply not worth it. Doctors who prescribe this without understanding the underlying cause of ADD and ADHD should be forced to take the drug themselves in high quantities and put in a rubber room.

Your son is most likely very deficient in many things and in particular quality fats. Does he crave things like french fries and fatty foods? If he does, that is his body telling you something.

Most likely, you were deficient in essential fatty acids like the omega 3's when you were pregnant. This is why children are born with nervous systems that are not well developed and why they get lots of ear infections. Foods with preservatives like aspartame and all artificial sweeteners and these types of chemicals can cause ADHD. He needs to be completely off ALL soda drinks, sugared and diet! The phosphoric acid in these drinks binds to the very nutrients like calcium, magnesium, zinc, iron that he needs to nourish his body.

Are you aware that ADD and ADHD are recent diseases? I would also not give him ANY vaccinations because this contributes heavily to this problem of ADD & ADHD. Are you aware that 1 in 79 male children in the U.S. now have autism?

The number used to be 1 in 10,000.

You need to get him off the typical American Diet. He needs quality fats. NO VEGETABLE OILS at all! Get some beef that comes from Grass Fed Cows. This has high omega 3 fatty acids, CLA, Vitamin K, and E. Very good for your son. Take all the ordinary table salt away. Purchase the pink sea salt that is a combination of Hawaiian salt & Mediterranean salt.

Buy only organic vegetables for him. Buy coconut oil and butter made from raw cream. Both of these oils will help him greatly. They are medium chain fatty acids that do not require bile to be broken down in the body and they will nourish his intestines and thyroid.

Your son is simply deficient in vitamins and minerals. That is the root cause of the problem. Give him nothing from a can or jar, only freshly cooked foods you prepare that have no preservatives or insecticides. You will see a huge difference in a very short time.

I would also go the the following web site and order the "max stress B" product and give that to him. Start out with 1/2 tsp. then work up to about 1 to 2 tsp. per day. You can put it in juice and he won't taste it. Buy this only from the following company: www.healthline.cc (not .com) and call them at: (310) 320 - 1123 to order product. This will help calm him down. If he can take small capsules, I would also order from them the probiotic. He should take one in the morning and one in the evening. This will greatly help his digestion.

good luck to you

Oh my God! I have not a clue about Ritalin but sympathise with you as I have a son and I can't imagine having to make that decision. It sounds like the school made the decision for you though. How dare they! Is there no way he could get a statement of special needs for a teaching support member to be in class, to spend time with him, helping him to concentrate? The school would get funding for that and surely with a one to one, or simlar, he could come off the drugs? The teachers don't have time to spend concentrating on one pupil, I know, but to say they will not teach him unless he's on drugs is appauling. He's probably not concentrating because he's bored, and who wouldn't be, he wants to be captured by something creative. He needs help, not drugs. If you search the net you'll find people who offer homeopathic remedies but who can you trust. I think you need to meet with the school, his head teacher, the class teacher and someone from the govenors board (a normal parent like yourself) and tell them what happens when he get's home. Make sure you do this while he's not around and beg them for as much help as possible. You would rather have a happy and confident child who can't concentrate than one who is ok at school but a nightmare when you get home and so unhappy. He's your baby! You do what you think is right! Don't let them tell you, like they already have. Ask them what experience they have. Get them to prove it. For all you know, he could be the first child with ADHA they've taught. You might be able to help them.
Good luck!!!!! x

There are indeed meds for ADHD that do not include Ritalin. I do not know the names of them, but your child's doctor should. Have you asked about such alternatives?
Is the doctor aware of the side effects of Ritalin?
Have you looked into the other aspects of helping your child, such as decreased sugar intake, strict and regular schedules, quiet times after high excitement, etc.?

If you have answered yes to these questions and your doctor insists that Ritalin is the only answer for your child, without trying an alternative, I think it's time to shop for another doctor.

I don't see where a school can refuse to educate a child based on the fact that he has adhd. As a parent it is your choice whether or not you want your child on the drug, not that schools. They cannot by law refuse him an education based on that. Especially if he is not disrupting classrooms or showing aggressive behavior. That just does not sound right to me. Check out your local laws. If you don't want him on the drug then I would wean him off of it. I personally don't believe a child that young unless psychologically unstable and harmful to himself or others should be on any type of medication.
That is ridiculous, check out your state laws and requirements do some research. I doubt they can refuse him an education considering this is most likely a public school system.

No, I don't agree. Some kids mature at a later age. Discipline and teaching the child good habits should be tried first. Not a great way to start off life in my opinion to be put on medications. It seems a bit unnatural in my view.

ADHD.....yeah, right. Children are naturally hyperactive, they shouldn't be stuffed full of drugs because of that. Its unnatural and definately not healthy. How about taking the kid out and play ball with him? Fresh air. Stop feeding him pills and handing your money out. Give him a video game, see if this "ADHD" affects him. Drugs don't always solve problems, something as simple as a game of tag will work just fine.

I 100% do not agree. When children are this young, they should be allowed to have some ADHD qualities about them. That is what makes them kids.

i personally do not believe in adhd. i homeschool my 4 kids and it has helped all of them to learn better. i have a 7 year old that would probably be labeled as add or adhd, but since he is not in the public school system, i don't have to worry about that. he gets the one on one attention from me that he would not get at school. as far as ritalin goes i don't know of anything else they prescribe for that. i am sorry to hesr your son is having such a difficult time. much luck to you and him.

You have to have patience with children to teach them patience.
