I have about 100 credits (pretty much all various science and G.E.) from 3 different colleges. I signed up for Nuke and want to go on a sub. I was thinking that becoming an officer would be a good idea. I figured I might be a few classes shy of a degree and could maybe attain one in two years (after Nuke school of course). Would I then have to re-up my contract? And what would the chances of even being able to go officer be?

you have several options.. Enlist, get the degree on your own time and apply to OCS. Or you could apply for STA-21. Be advised though: Once a Nuke, ALWAYS a Nuke. They will NOT let you commission into another Community, and they may not let you go period to even get a commission.

If you are accepted for a Commission, your Enlisted contract is null and void. your forfeit any subsequent bonus payments you may be entitled to.

I am a veteran of the Navy,n I would say by what u listed here u have a hell of a good chance so why not do it who is stopping u but u -n yes!you would have to re-up ur contract for six years at least as a commissioned officer.
If this is what u want to do than apply n do it before life passes u by we only get one chance in life so what r u waiting for,you have all the qualification and credentials that the Navy,is looking for especially a (Bubble-Head) ha! u no that is the nickname for a sub sailor right! I was n did stay a surface sailor (Aircraft Carrier-U.S.S.Nimtz CVN-68) nothing against my fellow sub sailors but I want a fighting chance if we get hit in a sub u do not have that much of a chance if it but I wish u all the luck in ur career ur off to a good start God,speed n may he be with u as well.

it sounds like you havent gotten to Nuke A-school yet. Or boot camp... they tell you this there.

When you get to your first command, talk to a career counselor or your chain of command about the seaman to admiral program. there are quite a few routes you can take. Your contract might actually change altogether.

You should make sure you are on top of your game from the very beginning. Take everything seriously and show intiative. If you haven't gone to boot camp yet, your rdc's will love you and will do good things for you. Do the same at A-school. Your sdc's will take notice also. Just remember that Nuke is an electronics rate which can be difficult if you don't have any experience...

GOOD LUCK SHIPMATE!

finish your college degree and apply to officer training school. If you make it through training then you will be an officer. In the Air force you have a 4yr service commitment to repay for training. If your enlistment will be up before you are able to apply or will be up during the time you could be at OTS then you would have to re-enlist but as soon as you are an officer then that system will take over.

My Husband became an officer when he finished his degree. It's very common.
