I've never had a dog shipped to me. If you fly up to get him/her and it's a puppy, then it should fit in a carrier under your seat. Different airlines have different prices but I think American is like 80 bucks. If you fly them as checked baggage in the cargo compartment it may be a little bit more. Maybe 100 or 120 bucks. Also, they have temperature restrictions when the dog flies as cargo. It can't be above or below set temperatures. Those temperatures vary between airlines. Be sure to check out the airlines website for more info.

First, the size of the dog is a factor. If you are flying back with the dog, some airlines will allow smaller dogs that are crated to ride in the cabin if the crate can be stored under the seat. If the dog is too large, or being shipped by the breeder, the dog must be crated and will be placed in the cargo hold with luggage. You will need to check with your airlines to find out the specific details for shipping. Weather is also a factor. It can be expensive to ship dogs via the airlines.

I asked a similar question a bit back. Next week I am having a puppy shipped to me. I wanted to go get him myself, but it will cost more, but money to me don't matter. My dog breeder, is shipping mine United Airlines in cargo, they have to be 8 weeks with all shots and there records. And it cost on size, and how many. Alone it would have been $220 now that he is going with another it is $200. To make a reservation for your pup you can only do it 7 days prior to take off. My pup is coming in on Next Monday. As well from a breeder.

You would have to pick the pup up from the airline the breeder is shipping it on.
You would need an airline approved carrier for the dog and yes they do charge and yes you have to schedule it in advance, Speak more with the breeder if they ship all the time they can answer all your questions.
