My Mom is undergoing chemotherapy for breast cancer and she says she got something that felt like acid reflux but much worse. Now she says she can barely swallow, her throat hurts and her mouth is full of sores. Is there something she could get at like Walgreen's that will help and what is it that she has? Thanks for your help. :0(

Her oncologist or the nurse that administers her chemotherapy can give her a variety of different prescription mouthwashes especially designed for treating chemo induced side effects. Walgreen's might have some mild numbing agents but none will be nearly as effective as those her Dr can prescribe. Walgreen's pharmacist will be quick to agree with me. good luck to you and your mom

This happens because the chemotherapy targets cells that divide rapidly. Cancer cells divide rapidly, but so does hair and mucous membranes, like the ones that line the mouth and throat. Be assured that this is a normal and expected side effect that is temporary. In the mean time, check out the mouthwashes that the others suggested and contact the doctor as well.

Biotene was also recommended to me. I ended up speaking to the dentist after my chemo was done and he said I should have told him. They have a special wash you can use when it it too painful to brush your teeth.
