right now, .223 ammo is getting scarce. This is because the war has depleted stocks and the few remaining companies that manufacture ammo for the military cannot keep up. In normal times, a wal mart that stocks ammo, would have it on hand. Right now, it's hit or miss as to having it in stock.

Some Wal-Marts no longer stock gun or ammo any more. If you know for a fact that the particular Wal-Mart in question does sell ammo, then they should and probably will have .223. It is a pretty popular caliber.
My local Wal-Mart used to sell ammo and had .223. Since changing their policy, I think you could find more ammo in a box of Cheerios than this Wal-Mart. :)

You do know that all it takes to buy ammo through the mail or over the internet and have it shipped to you is a photocopy of your drivers license and a signed statement saying no local, state or federal laws prohibit you from buying ammunition, don't you?
(Well, that and a checkbook or a credit/debit card, that is.)
Walmart carries .223/5.56NATO ammo, but their prices on all centerfire rifle and pistol ammo are high. Your best bet is to order it yourself in bulk from a wholesale outfit such as "Cheaper Than Dirt". They have good prices and are a reliable firm.

Unless you have an AK chambered for the .223 cartridge, no. Most civilian and military AK-47s are chambered for the 7.62x39 Russian short cartridge, about the same length as the .223 but a different caliber bullet and case. The .223 rounds should not fit in the AK magazine and if you somehow make one cycle it will jam in the chamber hopefully without firing and blowing bits off the action. There is an AK-74 model that fired a .22 caliber cartridge, but not the .223 either, so no to that gun also.

The ones in the New Orleans area have stopped selling guns and ammo back in the mid 1990's.

if wal mart still sells guns & ammo they would have the .223 its a very popular bullet. other stores like fred meyer sell it to. fmj 55 grain 20/box is around $3.79/box here. try a Joe's sporting goods store. they sell 223 in bulk bags of 500 rounds for $38.00 and 1000 round bags for $68.99

If your looking for basic FMJ, 55 gr. the most amount of boxes ive seen in walmart was 2(UMC), at $6.47 a box of 20. I went to Outdoor world/Bass pro shop and saw the same stuff for 6.79 a box of 20, but they had 1000's of rounds there.

They have it but WalMart is not a discount ammo store, it will be above average cost. If you need a box to supplement your supply for a trip to the range it would be OK. It would cost more than is necessary to stockpile ammunition from WalMart.

It should be available at any Wal-Mart that regularly stocks ammunition. Some of them have stopped.
