I am not sure on what I need as papers go to go to Mexico and come back. Do I just need my birth certificate and California ID to do so? I think as I have read that I don't need a passport if you are traveling by land until January the 31 of 2008. But I read that you need a turist card or something like that in order to stay there for over 72 hours or if you are going inside further of the border zone. I mean, do I really need to get that even tough I look Mexican and speak spanish?

You need 2 ID's. It can be a passport and DL, or a birth cert and 1 other ID. I don't remember needing a tourist card, and I went for 3 weeks. Maybe now you do. They will ask you your destination, and you tell them what your plans are. I have also driven into Mexico, and needed a passport, as of now, Californians do. It didn't used to be that way, you just needed one form of ID, like a DL.

You will need a passport, in order to get your passport you will need your birth certificate, After you get your passport you will also need to take your Passport and copy of your birth certificate with you becase mexican police will ask you for both documents.

If you look mexican and speak spanish also take your California ID with you becase you dont want any problems trying to get back in the US. The fact that you look mexican and speak spanish would be a huge drawback if you lost your papers. Sad but true.

If you are from the U.S. or Canada, you will need your passport or notarized birth certificate with state issued ID. You will also need a tourist card if you are traveling into the interior or plan to stay more than 72 hours. You can find more info here: http://www.mexonline.com/faqs.htm

Good luck!!!

What you need is to not go to Mexico or at least, not at this time as there's a lot of stuff going down. If you were to ask people of their experiences you'll find that more have a bad experience than not when they went to Mexico. I've heard many stories of people going to jail for long periods of time to loosing all there belongings.I have a key to a condo in the upper class and money part of Mexico and don't use it for these reasons. My personal horror story goes like this...Eight of us went to rocky point to get our underwater scuba license's when I was A Firefighter/ Paramedic and three of us went out and certified that day. later that evening some bandit's came into our Motor Home and at gun point took all the scuba equipment and hit one guy in the head with a shotgun. The Federally just told us that's the chance you take by coming down here. 5 Firefighters went home without getting certified and I learned that I have no business being in Mexico. Although getting certified was important to me and I was one of the three that did, I'd never go to Mexico for any reason and the key to our condo sits safely in my safe.

"Travelers staying in Mexico for more than 72 hours or traveling beyond the "border zone" need Mexico tourist cards. The tourist, or border zone, can extend up to 70 miles into Mexico, as it does near Puerto Penasco, southwest of Tucson on the Sea of Cortez, or about 12 miles, as it does south of Nogales. American citizens can travel in the border zone without a tourist card or a vehicle permit. Generally, the tourist zone extends until the first immigration checkpoint south of the US border in Mexico -- if you get there, you'll know it. "

You might as well apply for and get a passport, time is coming that every U.S. citizen will need one to be identified as not an illegal immigrant.

Why would you want to go there? Nobody's home. They're all here. Save the gas and just go to some large American sanctuary city. You're guaranteed to find all the Mexicans you want.
